Using AI as a Tool, Not a Crutch
I saw a comment the other day on a web design with AI video. It said,
“AI is taking away all creativity.”
That hit me.
Are we letting AI do the creative thinking for us?
The more I integrate AI into my workflow, the more I see it clearly. AI is powerful for certain things, but not all. Especially not the creative core of web design.
Where AI Doesn’t Shine
Asking ChatGPT for color palettes or layout ideas is fine for inspiration. But when you take what it gives you and run with it as-is, that’s where the creativity stops.
Tools like Relume are helpful, but they are randomizers. They generate decent layouts and filler content quickly, but they do not understand the project, the user, or the message.
Design is not random. It’s strategic. And strategy still needs a human brain.
Design Is Still Problem Solving
Design is a thinking muscle. If we don’t use it, it weakens.
I’ve tested this. I tried using AI to create layouts, wireframes, and brand directions. The process was slow and full of back-and-forths. In the end, I built what I needed faster with Bricks or Elementor than I could by tweaking AI outputs.
AI doesn’t replace real design instincts. It can’t think like you. And that’s a good thing.
How I Actually Use AI
While AI might not be great at creative direction, it is amazing for saving time and offloading repetitive tasks.
Here’s how I’m using it right now:
1. Creating Custom GPTs
I’ve started building GPTs that replicate my voice and logic. These are trained to help with content, documentation, and client support. I’m even creating ones that act like my team members.
If you’re a freelance web designer doing it all solo, this could be a game changer.
2. Automations with n8n
I’m using n8n to build automations for my business and for clients. These workflows handle tasks I used to do manually, like sending updates or organizing files.
Even better, AI automation is something you can offer to your clients as a service. And right now, the demand is growing fast.
Workshop Coming Soon
I’m working on a new workshop: Custom GPTs for Web Designers. It will be available for Core and Pro Members in the Circle Community.
We’ll explore how to use AI in real, useful ways without losing the creative side of what we do.
If you’re interested, reach out. And if you want to join the community, now’s a great time.
Let’s stay creative. Let’s build smarter.
